PEDIATRIC EYE EXAM

By age 3, your child should have a thorough optometric eye examination to make sure their vision is developing properly and there is no evidence of eye problems or diseases (i.e., crossed eye, lazy eye, etc).

Vision screening at school or a pediatrician’s office is a limited process. Many vision screenings cannot be use to diagnose an eye problem, but rather to indicate a potential need to get a further evaluation by an optometrist. A child who can pass a screening can still have vision problems.

As your child progress in school, they will face increasing demands on their visual abilities. Uncorrected vision or eye problems can impact your child academically, socially, and athletically. That's why a comprehensive eye and vision examination by an optometrist is so important. Early detection and treatment will give your child the best opportunities at success.

Signs of Eye and Vision Problems:

Your child may be too young to express their complaints or they may assume that their vision problem is typical and commonplace because they may think the way they see is how everyone sees.

Therefore, parents need to watch for signs that may indicate a child has vision problems. Signs may include:

• Frequent eye rubbing or blinking
• Short attention span
• Avoiding reading and other close activities
• Frequent headaches
• Covering one eye
• Tilting the head to one side
• Holding reading materials close to the face
• An eye turning in or out
• Seeing double
• Losing place when reading
• Difficulty remembering what he or she read
